New Novel and So Much More!

On Tuesday, I introduced our second class novel, The Mystery of the Stolen World Cup Trophy. We began by talking about what we know about the World Cup and professional soccer. We also watched a brief video about the history of the competition and its trophy – which was actually stolen in the 1960s and again in the 80s. We also learned some Spanish words and phrases that are featured in the book. the kids were excited the read the first chapter on Wednesday.

We also learned three new morphemes this week and a couple of the vocabulary words from our novel.

In grammar, we enjoyed learning all about conjunctions. We memorized the acronym FANBOYS to remember them all. The kids enjoyed watching ‘Conjunction Junction’ from Schoolhouse Rock, and we engaged with the lessons throughout the week with activities at the board, in our interactive notebooks, and around the room with task cards.

In social studies, we reviewed the facts about the Northeast region and practiced identifying and spelling the states. Our favorite way to prepare for the quiz was by competing in a Kahoot! In teams of three, students raced to answer questions about the region.

We also started learning about the next region – the Midwest!

Another exciting unit we kicked off this week was about songwriting and the history of country music. We identified some of our favorite songs, talked about the difference between performing artists and songwriters, and learned about common themes in country songs. Of course, part of the conversation revolved around those artists who write their own songs.

We also watched a clip of Willie Nelson performing “On the Road Again.”

In Morning Meeting, we played games of Sparkle, Maitre’d, and more. We also liked hearing about the staycations and trips everyone enjoyed over break!

A highlight of the week was Friday’s Spirit Assembly. In addition to meeting the late fall sports teams, we got to see our Junior and Middle School dance teams perform and our friends compete in Black vs. Orange games. Yay for Bebe!
