This week, 4th graders continued to enjoy learning map skills. We introduced latitude with a Nearpod app presentation, and made the connection between locating places on grids to using latitude and longitude coordinates. 4M students also enjoyed sorting continents into a Venn diagram of the Northern and Southern hemispheres as they located the equator on their globes.
In language arts, we learned three more suffixes and took a look at subject-verb agreement. We discussed singular and plural subjects and which kind of verbs they need.
We also read two chapters in Charlotte’s Web. Students wrote summaries of each one, and they were excited to dive into their first diary entries written from Wilbur or Charlotte’s POV.
We also continue to create similes in our writing and find similes in our reading. The boys and girls have begun brainstorming sensory details about a special place which they will incorporate into a piece of writing. They will also strive to include similes.
On Wednesday, we enjoyed our first Patchwork guest of the year, Vera Brogsol. She has written and illustrated a plethora of books for kids of all ages, and we enjoyed her live drawing and storytelling.
In Morning Meeting this week, students enjoyed a new game: 5 questions and 3 clues. One student had a Post-It on his or her back with a word or topic from class. They asked 5 questions and received 3 clues to help them figure it out! We also enjoyed Clap, Snap, Stomp! and more.
4E was excited to present facts at the Hispanic Heritage Month Assembly today. We represented 18 of the 21 Spanish-speaking countries around the world. Each child shared an interesting fact about their country which they had researched. Buen trabajo, estudiantes! MS students shared the Ensworth mission statement in English and Spanish and talked about why we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. We were also treated to a speech and a little demo by a Hispanic soccer player from Belmont.
