This week our grammar work focused on verbs. On Monday, we learned about action, linking and helping verbs. We even talked about infinitives! The students cut and pasted the definitions and examples of each type in their notebooks, and they wrote stories about a favorite vacation. Students had fun sharing their stories and finding all the verbs in one another’s work. On Thursday, we completed the task cards and also enjoyed a rhyming picture book on the topic.
We had lots of fun brainstorming words with the Latin bases rupt, tract, and spect.
Our writing lesson this week was about similes. Two students in each class introduced the topic with a skit. We all went through the script afterwards to find all of the similes. We will continue working with this type of figurative language next week. They’ve already found a few similes in Charlotte’s Web and a read-aloud. Great job, Thomas and Bebe, Connell and Annabelle!
Speaking of Charlotte’s Web, we read two chapters this week, and the students chose their characters for the Diary project. Everyone decided whether they wanted to write from the point of view of the pig or the spider and illustrated their book cover.
We also learned more vocabulary words from the novel.
In social studies, we reviewed, reviewed, and reviewed some more. We played Sparkle to spell the continents, we completed task cards about the map of the world, we used flashcards, and more! Our quiz was today, and next week we will move on to more map skills.
In Morning Meeting this week, we had fun with games of Hidden Clip, foreign language greetings and more. Today we discussed what students knew about 9/11. We had a conversation about the events surrounding that day, and we read one of my favorite books about it, Bravemole.
